Winfield man and neighbor help contain house fire Piney Breeze Road rancher damaged SOUTHWEST -- Mount Airy * Woodbine * Taylorsville * Winfield

October 07, 1992

A 58-year-old Winfield man and his neighbor used a fire extinguisher to help prevent the spread of a house fire yesterday.

Floyd Costley Sr., who has lived in the small rancher in the 1200 block of Piney Breeze Road for more than 40 years, said he was returning to his house when he saw smoke coming from the rear and knocked on his neighbor's door for help.

The neighbor, John Gazurian, grabbed a small fire extinguisher and both men ran to Mr. Costley's house, where they found heavy smoke coming from the rear of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Mr. Gazurian used the extinguisher on the fire while his wife called 911.

Firefighters from Winfield, Gamber and Westminster were dispatched to put out the fire, which burned from the kitchen to the attic just above.

A deputy state fire marshal, who was called to the scene, photographed and examined the bottom of the refrigerator, which had been carried out to the front lawn, to determine the cause of the blaze.

No estimate of the damage was immediately available.
