The Anne Arundel Community College volleyball team reached the semifinals of the Catonsville Tournament last weekend, winning four matches before losing to Northeastern Christian of Philadelphia in three games.

The Pioneers (14-6 overall, 12-5 in JuCo) opened with a 15-9, 15-12 win over Potomac State. Victories followed over Lehigh Community College, 11-15, 15-11, 15-9; Delaware Tech, 16-14, 15-17, 15-11; and Catonsville, 7-15, 15-3, 15-13.

Finally, the Pioneers "ran out of gas," said assistant coach Betty Hession, and lost to Northeastern Christian, 13-15, 15-2, 15-5.

Hession added that Anne Arundel's win over Delaware Tech -- the defending tournament champions -- "was our first over them in my 11 years of coaching here."

Queen Anne's High graduate Penni Woolford had 41 kills, 12 against Delaware Tech, and 28 solo blocks. Melissa Dombkiewicz (St. Mary's) added 29 kills and seven blocks and Leesa McMickle (South River) had 13 kills and played solid defense from the back row.
