It's registration time for the Crofton Athletic Council's winter basketball, wrestling and cheerleading programs. Walk-in registration is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and Oct. 17, and noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 7 at Crofton Elementary School on Duke of Kent. The cost is $25 for wrestling and $30 each for basketball and cheerleading. After Dec. 1, the cost will increase by $10. Coaches or commissioners are not allowed to accept registrations.

The Crofton wrestling team will begin the season with a parents' meeting at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Crofton Middle School's auxiliary gym. The program is open to boys, ages 6 to 15, who weigh between 40 and 155 pounds. No previous experience is necessary, and no one is ever cut from the program due to lack of ability or experience.

Crofton has two teams, A and B, in the Anne Arundel County Youth Wrestling League. The more experienced wrestlers also compete in several county, state and regional tournaments. For more information, call Frank Mezzullo at 261-3164.

County tryouts for Crofton's basketball teams are planned for Oct. 24 to 25 at Crofton Middle School.

Those scheduled for Oct. 24 are as follows: for 12 and under boys, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; 10 and under boys, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 14 and under boys, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; 10 and under girls, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; 12 and under girls, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; 14 and under girls, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tryouts on Oct. 25 are as follows: 10 and under girls, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; 12 and under boys, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 10 and under boys, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; 14 and under boys, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.; 12 and under girls, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; 14 and under girls, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Don't forget that you must register before trying out for a team.

The second annual Halloween Happenings will be held Oct. 22 to 31 at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds, Route 178 in Crownsville. There will be a haunted hay ride and haunted barn, along with spooks, ghosts, vampires, mummies and witches. Youth group rates are available. Call 721-2809.

The Bowie-Crofton Business and Professional Women will honor Myrtle J. Porter as its Woman of the Year and Bobbie Piper as its Employer of the Year at a dinner meeting Sunday at Piper's Pavilion, 12809 Tenth St. in Bowie. The Crofton Country Club creates its annual witch's house and the Crofton Kiwanis sponsors its annual Halloween parade. This year's parade will be held on Halloween. Coordinator Linda Van Sickel wants to hear from any organization interested in participating. Call 721-1302.

The Multi-Sport school is offering two new classes: a dance training class for athletes and a self-defense class for women. The dance class includes ballet training techniques and is designed for gymnasts, ice skaters, synchronized swimmers and baton twirlers.

Chien Vuong, a national black-belt tae kwon do champion, will teach a morning self-defense class for women Tuesdays and Thursdays in the all-purpose room. For information, call 721-0414.
