WMC to honor grant donors, student recipients

October 05, 1992

Recipients and donors involved in Western Maryland College's Carroll County Student Grant Program will be honored at a luncheon at noon Thursday in the Decker College Center Forum.

The luncheon celebrates the college's eighth year of bringing together Carroll County students and area businesses to help make the college more affordable to county residents.

On hand for this event will be the program's volunteer committee vice chairwoman, Joanne Frances, manager of administration for Masonry Contractors Inc. of Manchester.

For 1991-92, the college raised $55,000 with the help of nearly 100 businesses operating in Carroll -- second only to last year's TC record total of $65,160 contributed by more than 100 businesses. With the support of these companies -- 68 of which provided funding at the named-grant level of $350 or more -- WMC provides each Carroll student with a $1,500 renewable grant, applied directly to their tuition. This year alone, more than 125 WMC students benefited from the fund.

Over the past eight years, hundreds of businesses have supplied more than 1,000 student grants totaling more than $1 million.

Others at the luncheon will be grant sponsors, recipients, their parents and families and the volunteers who make up the program's fund-raising committee. Speakers will include Robert H. Chambers, president of Western Maryland, and M. Lynn Rill, program chairman and vice president for residential real estate at Carroll County Bank and Trust.

After serving three years as chairman, Mr. Rill will hand over the post to Ms. Frances in June 1993. Ms. Frances is the mother of WMC student Christine Frances Osborne, a '94 business administration/economics major.
