U.S. Sailboat Show opens Thursday

The 23rd annual U.S. Sailboat Show, the largest in-the-water sailboat show in the world, opens Thursday at the Annapolis City Dock.

More than 200 sailboats will be displayed in the water, with more set up on land.

Five big circus-type tents and more than 130 smaller tents will be crammed with merchandise and other items related to sailing.

Personalities on hand for this year's show include America's Cup skipper Dennis Conner and two around-the-world sailors, Michael Carr and Mike Plant.

Parking will be at a premium downtown. Show organizers RTC recommend that visitors park at the boat show lots and take the free shuttle bus to and from the show.

Thursday is Trade/Press/VIP day. A VIP ticket will cost $20. Many serious buyers think it is worth the price to see the boats under less-crowded conditions.

The regular show begins Friday, with admission at $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under $4.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday,; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.

Gunman holds up Mayo convenience store

A man wielding a chrome revolver robbed a Mayo convenience store of an undetermined amount of money Saturday.

County police reported the man walked into the Mayo Quick Shop, at 1184 Central Ave, around 7:20 p.m. and approached the counter. After all the other customers had left, he pulled out the revolver and announced a robbery.

The suspect was described as a black male, in his mid 20s, about 5-foot-10 and weighing 200 pounds, with light skin, a mustache and a beard. He was wearing a white baseball cap, maroon shorts and a white-gray sweat shirt. He was last seen leaving the area in a maroon-colored 1989 Ford Thunderbird.
