Linthicum 14-year-old wins literary prize

Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece, 14, of Linthicum, recently won one of 10 literary first prizes from Disney Adventures magazine.

Jocelyn, a Mount De Sales Academy freshman, won for "Reflections on Life", a story involving a character exchange between two women caught in a mirror. The mystery was an entry in Disney Adventures' annual national short story contest. It was one of more than 700 entries.

Last year, Jocelyn won an honorable mention in the same contest. She has entered other writing contests as well, including those sponsored by Seventeen, a young ladies' fashion magazine, and Cricket, a children's magazine.

As a student at Mount De Sales, Jocelyn is involved in the drama club and hopes to join the Literary Club come the first of next year.

Teen burglars break into Belle Grove

Two teen-agers broke into the Belle Grove Elementary School last Sunday, county police reported.

Officers were called to the school at 3:40 p.m. by someone who saw two boys climbing out of a classroom window in back of the school. But when police arrived, the burglars were gone. School officials did not know what, if anything, was taken.

*Linthicum:A house in the 1000 block of Lilac Lane was broken into sometime between last Friday and Saturday.

*Linthicum:Valerie A. Johnson, 36, reported to police that someone stole the license plates off her 1983 Chevrolet sometime between last Saturday and Sunday.

police said the car was parked in front of Ms. Johnson's home in the 200 block of Regency Circle.

*Linthicum:A lawn mower was stolen from a garage in the 400 block of Twin Oaks Road Thursday.
