October 05, 1992

Marine Lance Cpl. Dmitri Wasilewski, son of Peter J. Wasilewski of Ellicott City, recently participated in the search for the Italian cargo plane that went down while flying a United Nations relief mission to Sarajevo.

A member of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Lejeune, N.C., Corporal Wasilewski flew the mission aboard a CH-53 Super Stallion helicopter from the USS Iwo Jima, which was participating in Operation Provide Promise in the Adriatic Sea at the time of the incident.

During the mission, the Navy helicopters drew small-arms ground fire, which they evaded and returned safely to the Iwo Jima.

Corporal Wasilewski is a 1988 graduate of Glenelg High School. He joined the Marine Corps in February 1989.
