Certification clinics offered by Health Dept.

Certification clinics for the newly expanded Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Food Program are open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Magothy Health Clinic, 2501 Mountain Road.

Sponsored by the county Department of Health, WIC provides free supplemental food and nutritional education to infants, pregnant and nursing women and children under 5. To be eligible for benefits, an applicant must be a county resident, have a special health need and meet minimum income requirements.

Money available for homebuyers

Anne Arundel County has money for two first-time homebuyer programs.

The Settlement Expense Loan Program provides up to $5,000 in settlement expenses.

The Mortgage Assistance Program can provide up to $10,000 to help homebuyers write down the mortgage on their first home.

Cost for homes funded by the program cannot exceed $88,000 for existing houses and $93,500 for new construction.

For households earning less than $28,901 annually, the mortgage term is 30 years and 7 percent interest. For households earning between $28,901 and $36,080, and households with two or more people earning not more than $45,045, the mortgage term is 30 years at 7.75 percent.

Applicants should contact a participating lender in the county, Lenders will provide all necessary information and application forms. To participate in programs, borrowers must have a signed contract of sale on a qualifying home before applying for a mortgage loan. Information: 222-7600.

The 1992 edition of the Directory of Community Services is available at branches of the Anne Arundel County Public Library.

The 184-page directory lists and describes the services of more than 400 local health and human-service agencies.
