Germantown man held in a fatal August crash

Howard County police charged a 47-year-old Germantown man with driving while intoxicated and manslaughter by auto yesterday in connection with a single-car collision in August that killed his 28-year-old friend from Columbia.

Elias Woodrow Howes, of the 18700 block of Curry Powder Lane, also was charged with vehicular homicide while intoxicated, reckless driving, negligent driving and failure to control speed to avoid a collision, police said.

He's being held at the county detention center on $10,000 bond, police said.

Blood tests showed Mr. Howes' blood alcohol content was .22The legal limit is .10.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Aug. 14, Mr. Howes' 1983 Toyota Celic failed to negotiate a curve on Route 108, just west of Harpers Farm Road in Columbia, police said. The car ran off the road and struck a utility pole and overturned.

The passenger, Harry Herbert Pack, of the 10400 block of Route 108, was thrown from the car, which rolled over him, police said.

Mr. Howes was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
