MOUNT AIRY — George M. Frank gets bronze medal

Berrett resident George M. Frank received a bronze medal from the U.S. Department of Commerce last week for his computer work in Kuwait after the Persian Gulf war.

As an employee of the National Geodetics Survey, Mr. Frank traveled to the Middle East last September to set up a computer that would analyze the pollution caused by oil rig fires in Kuwait.

He also taught the Kuwaitis how to use the new system.

"They needed someone who knew how to work with the computer," Mr. Frank said.

"I was lucky to have the experience with the data system and the right skills. It all fell into place."

The National Geodetics Survey, a branch of the U.S. Department of Commerce, measures the shape and size of the earth, often to determine where to place bridges, roads and other structures.
