Middle school students urged to tune out in Oct. Sixth-graders at North Carroll Middle School in Hampstead are being encouraged to turn off the tube for the month of October.

"TV Busters," a voluntary nationwide program, encourages children to refrain from unnecessary TV viewing and presents those who participate with awards and prizes.

The only catch is that students have to fill out "buster slips" -- and have them signed by their parents -- stating that they watched only news or educational programs.

A 1987 graduate of Hereford Senior High School in Parkton and a 1991 graduate of Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., with a bachelor of science degree, Lieutenant Schmidt entered the Marine Corps in December 1991.

During the course at Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, Va., newly commissioned officers are prepared for assignment to the Fleet Marine Force.

The course includes instruction in land navigation, marksmanship, tactics, military law, personnel administration, Marine Corps history and traditions, communications and the techniques of military instruction.

Officer candidates are taught leadership and teamwork in addition to participating in a demanding physical conditioning program.
