Howard County Schools

STANDOUT

September 28, 1992

* Name: Marcus Klein, 16, of Columbia.

* School: Oakland Mills High School.

* Why Marcus was chosen: Marcus is the student associate to the Howard County Board of Education; a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Competition; and an editor of the OMega yearbook. He helped write and produce a play, "Game of Chance," that was performed by professional actors at Toby's Dinner Theatre in Columbia.

* Marcus' comments: As a student associate, "I liked helping improve the educational system for both myself, my sisters and their classmates."

* Marcus' goals: Before studying civil engineering and political science at Rice University in Houston, Marcus said he wants to empower the student associate position with voting privileges. Currently, the student associate has no say in Board of Education matters. If the student associate is allowed to vote, "the position may gain more respect among students," Marcus said. Once he becomes a civil engineer, Marcus said he wants to design cheaper, more environmentally sound trains. As a politician, he said he would "get involved and change things."
