A new Evening Sun in Carroll CARROLL COUNTY

September 28, 1992

As you probably have noticed, today's edition of this newspaper looks much different from previous ones. The Evening Sun has been transformed so that you will receive more intense coverage of local news and community affairs in addition to the state, national and international news to which you have become accustomed.

Beginning today, readers in Carroll, Howard and Anne Arundel counties will receive a copy of the paper tailor-made for them. Not only will there be more Carroll County news in your edition, there will be daily high school and community sports coverage, customized listings of Carroll cable television channels and a special county classified section.

This space is another vital piece of the redesigned paper. Each weekday, an editorial commenting on some aspect of life in Carroll County will appear here. An editorial writer based in our Westminster bureau will write the editorials, which will reflect the views of The Baltimore Sun's editorial board.

Some days, the editorial may deal with topics such as the wisdom of adopting charter government or imposing impact fees on developers. Other editorials will deal with matters specific to one of Carroll's municipalities. Some editorials will be critical; others will praise.

Our goal is that the opinions expressed here -- whether dealing with a controversy over a countywide matter or over a traffic signal needed for a dangerous intersection -- will be informed and will attempt to provide readers with a deeper understanding of issues that affect their lives.

Also, on Sundays, the Carroll/Maryland section of the newspaper will include a page titled "Carroll Viewpoints." It will contain a column written by Brian Sullam, an editorial writer, as well as letters to the editor.

We strongly encourage readers who disagree with our editorials and columns -- as well as those who agree -- to share their thoughts with us. You may send them to us at: Letters to the Editor, The Baltimore Sun, 15 E. Main St., Westminster, Md. 21157, or fax them to 410-751-7916.

We hope our weekday editorials about Carroll County as well as the Sunday commentary page provide insights and a forum for matters important to you.
