Newell ends training at San Diego post

Navy Airman Daryl M. Newell, son of Deniese J. Piepiora of Bel Air, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, San Diego.

During the cycle, recruits are taught general military subjects designed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 occupational fields. Studies include seamanship, close-order drill, naval history and first aid.

Airman Newell is a 1987 graduate of Harford Vocational Technical High School.

Munitions technician reports for duty

Air Force Technical Sgt. Earl H. Blansfield has reported for duty at Hill Air Force Base, Ogden, Utah.

Blansfield, a munitions systems technician, is the son of Grace C. Blansfield of Havre de Grace.

His wife, Melanie, is the daughter of Melvin W. and Jean B. DeBaugh of Havre de Grace.

NB The sergeant is a 1979 graduate of Havre de Grace High School.

Thompson takes part in 'Navy Days' festival

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Robert E. Thompson, son of Victoria and Warren H. Thompson Sr. of Havre de Grace, is on a six-month deployment to the North Atlantic aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Harry E. Yarnell.

The USS Harry E. Yarnell is the flagship for standing Naval Forces Atlantic, which has been in operation for 24 years. The ship is to participate in intensive exercises with the NATO force.

Officer Thompson visited Den Heldu, in the Netherlands, during the "Navy Days" festival, which drew over 150,000 visitors from the Netherlands, Germany, Canada and the United States. The visit also included trips to Amsterdam.

The 1987 graduate of Havre de Grace High School joined the Navy in May 1988.

His wife, Stephanie, is the daughter of Donald V. and Johanna White of Joppatowne.

Dals is deployed in the Indian Ocean

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Howard N. Dals, son of Janice Morris of Havre de Grace, is aboard the dock landing ship USS Fort Fisher, midway through a Western Pacific and Indian Ocean deployment.

He participated in training exercises to challenge the readiness of ship and crew.

The 1986 graduate of Havre de Grace High School joined the Navy in March 1990.

Sumner participates in UNITAS exercise

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Jim S. Sumner, a 1978 graduate of Bel Air High School is currently aboard the guided missile cruiser USS San Jacinto, midway through a six-month deployment to the Caribbean and South America.

He is participating in exercise UNITAS, which brings together ships, aircraft and ground forces of the U.S., Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.

1% He joined the Navy in March 1978.
