McKay's Million

September 25, 1992

Once again, the Maryland Million looks like a big winner. The state's horse-racing industry has warmly embrace this lucrative day of home-state racing at Pimlico tomorrow. Big purses have ** drawn big interest from trainers and owners, not to mention the shot in the arm this provides for Maryland's horse-breeding industry.

Much of the credit goes to television sports announcer Jim McKay, Maryland's ambassador to the wide world of racing. He has adopted this million-dollar series of 12 races, lassoing corporate sponsors and pumping up enthusiasm among folks in the local racing establishment.

With racing in a steep decline, the Maryland Million provides some good news for the future. It has encouraged more owners to breed their mares to Maryland stallions. It has sparked growing interest in the races themselves from top jockeys and trainers. The Maryland Million is thriving. It is worth every penny of that million.
