Mosquito coast causes ultramarathoner to exit

RUNNING

All you need to know about the strength and enduranc needed to compete in the Sri Chinmoy Ultimate Ultra marathon is this: Ronnie Wong, Baltimore's marathon man for multiday events, decided to sit out this year's event.

Or ask Baltimorean Bruce Holtman, who competed with Wong in last year's 1,300-mile race and was back this year in that event, part of the three-race package at Ward's Island Park in New York City that also includes 1,000- and 700-mile races.

Holtman, who is ranked seventh among Americans with a 14-day, 20-hour finish in the Sri Chinmoy 1,000-mile race, finished fourth in last year's 1,300-mile ultramarathon with 1,165 miles.

Two years ago, a pulled Achilles' tendon forced him to drop out of the 1,300-mile race after 406 miles.

In this year's race, there were two male starters in the 1,300-mile race, and when Holtman, 41, dropped out Friday after running 311 miles over four days. That left Trishul Cherns, a 35-year-old Canadian living in Ozone Park, N.Y., as the sole male runner in the 1,300-mile division.

The reason for his departure remains a sensitive matter to Holtman. After all, he wasn't sidelined by stomach cramps . . . or muscle tears . . . or general fatigue, but by something seemingly less significant, although no less annoying.

"The mosquitoes ate me to death," Holtman said Sunday night. "They like me a lot, and this is a very damp area so they bit me a lot. I couldn't sleep. Thursday night, I lay down for two hours, but couldn't sleep. So Friday, I got up, ran a couple of more miles and then I decided that was it."
