O'Rear, Logan take MAPGA title

LOTHIAN -- Marty O'Rear reeled off seven birdies and a bogey, and partner Sam Logan protected the margin with pars at the last two holes, as the pair won the annual Middle Atlantic PGA Pro-Assistant championship with a 6-under-par 34-3266 at Old South Country Club yesterday.

O'Rear, who has been at Sully National Driving Range in Sterling, Va., since July, made all his birdies from inside 12 feet. He highlighted the round with a sand wedge shot to 6 inches for a birdie-2 at the 150-yard 16th to provide the winning margin.

O'Rear had two three-putts, one for par and one for the team's only bogey. After going without a major title for most of his 12 years in the Middle Atlantic Section, O'Rear made this two in as many tries after winning the Central Chapter championship at Evergreen CC last week.

The winning pair both reached the par-4 17th in regulation, and Logan, back in the Middle Atlantic Section after a stretch in the South Florida Section, saved it at the last hole after O'Rear drove out of bounds.

The late-afternoon finish disposed of a possible playoff, as three teams in the 69-team field tied for second at 67. Jim Fitzgerald-Richard Marik of Chevy Chase had the best chance, but three-putted the last hole.

The leaders: Marty O'Rear-Sam Logan, Suly National, 34-3266; Steve Danielson-Jeff Curtis, Belle Haven, 33-3467; Larry Ringer-Steve Cramer, Prince Georges, 34-3367; Jim Fitzgerald-Richard Marik, Chevy Chase, 33-3467; Tom-Dennis Dougherty, Bermuda, 34-3468; Bill Molloy-Dennis Winters, Eisenhower, 33-3568; Jim Muething-Cary Sciorra, Robert Trent Jones, 34-3468.
