Kalish, Mayer look to bag another 2-man title

120 teams to tee off at Mount Pleasant

Defending champions Sheldon Kalish and Terry Mayer head a field of 120 teams for the annual two-man team championship of the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation, Saturday and Sunday at Mount Pleasant Golf Course.

The leading entries include Bill Stout-Joel Kaye, Bob Kaestner-Bob Lee, Larry Storck-Joe Franz IV, Jackie Rites-Charlie Harris, and Henri deLozier-Donald Meyer.

* There are 72 teams for tomorrow's annual Middle Atlantic PGA Pro-Assistant championship at Old South CC. Last year's winning team of Bob Boyd-Mike Davis from Woodmont CC will not defend because Boyd is no longer in the section.

* The Middle Atlantic PGA will hold its annual Seniors/Quarter-Century championships Wednesday and Thursday at Wintergreen Resort, Va., with a field of 25. The respective 1991 winners were Al Green and Leo Steinbrecher. The event is also the qualifier for the National PGA Senior Club Professional championship, Oct. 27-30, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

* Ken Smoot posted putting totals of 32-30-34-32128, and won the first putting championship, conducted by the Mount Pleasant Men's Golf Club as a part of its regular schedule of monthly tournaments. Smoot's total, 16 under par, included 21 one-putts.

Golf to softball

Last week, when Pat Erdly of Hillendale Country Club won the annual Oriole tournament, the handicap championship of the Women's Golf Association, it marked only the first half of a busy schedule for her.

Erdly, who only will say that she is "over 30," is the pitcher for the Towson-based Long Shots, a slow-pitch softball team that recently won its third straight Maryland state championship and is currently competing in the national tournament, a double-elimination event in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Its best national showing in the past has been losing the second-place game in extra innings.

"The Oriole was my first exposure to tournament golf outside the club, and I'll tell you I'd rather have the bases loaded and a 3-0 count on the batter than face another one of those 3-foot putts," she said.

Bob's job

Bob Benning, former head professional at Congressional CC and Lansdowne Conference Resort, is the head professional and director of membership marketing at Stoneleigh CC in Round Hill, Va. The club, located about 10 miles west of Leesburg, is partially open and due for completion in late spring.

New members of the Middle Atlantic PGA include Thomas Beidleman, Baltimore CC; Frank Blind, Diamond Ridge GC; Steve Hord, Chestnut Ridge; and Chris Rouse, CC Maryland. . . . Jay Standard of Fredericksburg, Va., the Middle Atlantic Section representative, will be one of 46 players in the field for the annual Titleist/Foot-Joy PGA Assistants championship, scheduled for Tuesday-Friday at PGA West in LaQuinta, Calif. . . . The USGA has named U.S. Amateur champion Justin Leonard and three members of the 1991 U.S. Walker Cup squad -- David Duval, Allen Doyle and Jay Sigel -- to the 15th annual World Amateur Team championship, Oct. 1-4, at Vancouver, B.C. Vinny Giles III, of Richmond, Va., a three-time team member, is the non-playing team captain . . . On tour: Tina Barrett, Baltimore, No. 30,

$154,125; Fred Funk, Laurel, No. 31, $400,892.
