One thing our neighborhood lacks, my husband said not so long ago, is a Greg's bagels. Well, we didn't get a Greg's, but last month we did get Sam & Noah's Bagels, and we're not complaining. S&N's bagels don't have the popular light taste and texture of Greg's, but then again, S&N's bagels are more like classic bagels: They're chewy and dense and you're not hungry an hour later.

They're served up in a variety of ways you can carry out, and all the varieties I've tried have been first-rate. An unadorned bagel, with nothing on it, is 55 cents; S&N's has several kinds, from plain to sesame seed to chocolate chip. If you prefer your bagel spread with some version or another of cream cheese, it'll cost from 75 cents to $1.50. I've tried the Very Veggie Cream Cheese, which was crunchy and fresh; and the walnut and raisin cream cheese, which was also very good but too sweet for what my particular set of taste buds can handle before their second cup of coffee.

Speaking of sweet, S&N's strawberry cream cheese croissant ($1.19) made one of my co-workers exclaim, "This is worth going off your diet for," and the lemon poppy-seed muffin (90 cents) tastes more like a gourmet cake than anything healthy, unless the health we're talking about is mental.

If sweet is not your thing, S&N's does offer the basic bagel with egg, sausage or bacon ($1.50). Or, for non-breakfast meals or snacks, you could choose from light-fare items such as salads ($1.95 to $3.95), sandwiches ($3.95) and freshly made bread (priced daily). So far I've tried sandwiches made on sunflower seed bread and sourdough bread, and both were excellent.
