Sobriety checkpoint nets 12 arrests

Howard County police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs last weekend during the department's third sobriety checkpoint this year.

About 565 vehicles passed through the checkpoint on U.S. Route 40 in Ellicott City early Saturday, police said.

The arrests push the total number of motorists arrested durinsobriety checkpoints so far this year to 42.

The checkpoints were established in 1988 to deter drunken and drugged driving in the county, police said.

The county's chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving aided the police department during the checks.

Boy, 14, charged in assault of girl, 16

A 14-year-old Jessup youth was charged with assaulting a 16-year-old female as she walked along Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia, county police said.

The 14-year-old, whose name is being withheld because of his age, was released to the custody of his parents, police said.

The alleged assault occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Monday at Little Patuxent Parkway and Harpers Farm Road, police said.

As the Columbia girl walked, a person approached her from behind and grabbed her shoulder, police said. When the victim turned around, the person grabbed her breasts and then ran, police said.

The suspect was caught a short time later near the Wilde Lake Tennis Center in Columbia, police said. The victim was uninjured.

* Columbia 10300 block of Little Patuxent Parkway: A 1992 blue Jeep Wrangler was stolen Sunday from The Mall in Columbia. The Maryland plates are NEWCJ.

5400 block of Fallriver Row: On Sunday, Sept. 6, a resident hit a suspect who had unlocked a window and entered his residence. Police charged Stuart Wesley Schuster, 23, of the 10800 block of Green Mountain Circle, with the break-in.

6400 block of Dobbin Road: Someone smashed glass at the Jiffy Lube on Saturday and stole a cash register with cash inside.

* Ellicott City: 3000 block of Rogers Ave.: Glass was smashed at a High's convenience store Saturday. Cigarettes were taken.

2900 block of Southview Road: Victor Manuel Espinosa, 32, oElkridge, was charged in a domestic-related assault, which was reported Sunday.

7800 block of James Ave.: Someone entered the Ryland Homes construction site and unlocked a door Wednesday. A door, stair rails, panel sheet and cabinets were taken.

7700 block of Graystone Court: Between Sept. 3 and Sept. 9, someone entered the Ryland Home construction site and took rails.

8400 block of U.S. 40: A silver 1990 Honda Accord was stolen Sunday. The Maryland plates are XRY-565.

* Elkridge: 6800 block of Douglas Legum Drive: Someone smashed glass at Chris's Lunch Express and stole a cash tray from the cash register Saturday.

6800 block of Douglas Legum Drive: Someone smashed glass at Dorsey Cleaners and stole cash from the register Sunday.

* North Laurel: 9200 block of Bridle Path Lane: Someone tried to enter a residence Sept. 7, but a deadbolt lock prevented entry.

10100 block of U.S. 1: A window was removed from the All Tune & Lube auto shop Sunday. Nothing was taken.
