Family flees apartment fire in Middle River

September 15, 1992

A Baltimore County firefighter was injured and at least on family displaced early today when a fire raced through an apartment house in the 500 block of Langley Road in Middle River.

Reported about 3:40 a.m., the fire began in one apartment and spread to five other apartments. Authorities said five of the apartments were vacant.

More than a dozen pieces of fire apparatus from fire companies at Essex, Middleborough, Middle River, and Hyde Park battled the fire before it was declared under control about 4:45 a.m.

Water was sprayed on nearby dwellings when embers from the fire landed on their roofs.

None of the people forced to flee were injured, fire officials said. Damage to the two-story building, which had been converted to apartments from a single dwelling, was described as extensive.

A spokesman for the fire department said one firefighter slipped and fell on the ground and was taken to Franklin Square Hospital. He was treated for a minor back injury and released.

His name and station assignment were not immediately available.

L Early morning traffic was detoured by Essex District police.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
