Lawyer pleads guilty to fraud

September 15, 1992

ELLICOTT CITY -- An Ellicott City lawyer pleaded guilty Friday to fraud while defending a doctor in a medical malpractice case.

Dennis J. Simon, 46, faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine in his Dec. 1 sentencing before federal District Judge J. Frederick Motz.

Simon worked as general counsel for Professional Risk Insurers Management Exclusive -- an insurance company. Simon listed his legal fees at twice the normal rate while defending an anesthesiologist in a case that eventually was settled for $3 million. He doubled the fees to reduce the amount his insurance company would have to pay in the settlement, according to court papers filed by federal prosecutors.
