Hammond Bears 1992 Howard field hockey at a glance

September 13, 1992

Coach: Gay Petrlik, fifth season

1991 record: 5-5-2

Returnees: Seniors Jill Farrow (GK), Becky Snyder (F), Nikki Dey (D), Elka Ohnoutka (D), Christine Eline (SW); juniors Rebecca Meyer (L), Amber Duckworth (F), Ellen Denny (F), Jill Hoffhines (F).

Newcomers to watch: Senior Christine Mathieu (F); juniors Bethany Thompson (F), Amanda Thompson (F), Dorothy Pietryka sophomore Heather Brown (L/D).

Coach's outlook: "We're not as fundamentally sound as last year. We don't have as much stick finesse. Scoring may be a problem for us. But I certainly think that with the talent we have, if the newcomers gel with the veterans, we're going to do well."

Howard County Sun outlook: The Bears lost four All-County players to graduation -- including Player of the Year Erin Beerman and leading scorer Chris Bailey -- and those losses will be tough to replace. Snyder, a third-year player, and Hoffhines, a returning starter, will be expected to step up. Defensively, Hammond is more stable, especially with Farrow returning after averaging nine saves and stopping 90 percent of the opposition's shots. The Bears look like a middle-of-the-pack team.
