Howard Lions 1992 Howard field hockey at a glance

September 13, 1992

Coach: Terry Flaig, first season

1991 record: 5-7-1

Returnees: Seniors Betsy Allen (GK), Sayshan Conver (L), Florrie Metta (D), Beth Verchinski (L).

Newcomers to watch: Juniors Wendy Brodsky (D), Susan Burgee (D), Tammi Daniels (L), Becky Dennis (L), Jenny Fox (F), Alicia Gomes (L), Gwen Harrison (F), Sharon Parker (D), Nicole Parker (F), Kim Shupe (F), Melissa Stewart (F), Emily Moore (L).

Coach's outlook: "We only have four seniors, and we have four first-time juniors, so we're looking kind of young. Our lack of stickwork and lack of knowledge of the game shows. I have a lot of questions to answer. Right now, starting a good program is my priority."

Howard County Sun outlook: Flaig, the third coach at Howard in the last three years, steps into a true rebuilding picture after faring well with the Lions lacrosse team last spring in her first coaching stint. Nine starters graduated, leaving only Conver and Verchinski, who should do fine in the middle. After that, the Lions are basically rolling the dice with an assortment of unproven players. They are so inexperienced that it's hard to picture the Lions winning more than two or three games.
