That was the first inclination after watching Mount St. Mary's steal a 1-0 victory over Towson State in the soccer opener for both teams yesterday. The underdog Mountaineers, who won just three of 17 games last year, got a goal from Steve Jost in the 23rd minute and operated from the defensive end the rest of the way.

Towson State goalie Rich Pellegrini, who didn't make a save, suffered an early calf injury and didn't backtrack quick enough to stop Jost's 25-yard chip shot, which was assisted by Pat Gannon.

Over the remaining 67 minutes, a barrage of shots were usually sent right at Mountaineer goalies Mark Hepperlin and Sean Holleran, as the tentative Tigers, who started three freshmen and a transfer, vainly searched for replacements for Joe Layfield and Ed McCue. They combined for 32 goals and 13 assists as seniors last year, when Towson State won its third straight East Coast Conference title.

"They miss those two guys," said Mount St. Mary's coach Jim Deegan. "We were fortunate to survive this one. We've only been practicing for two weeks, and our guys got sloppy. They got tired too, because we're not very deep. That was ugly."

Deegan enjoyed the first day of the rest of his life at Mount St. Mary's. From the fall of 1956 to last spring, he coached soccer, indoor track and field and outdoor track, and his 37th year here is the first in which his official duties are limited to soccer.
