September 02, 1992

Doug Neely became the third former Blast player to join the Spirit of the National Professional Soccer League, signing a one-year contract yesterday.

Neely, 27, played in all 40 Blast games last season, finishing with eight goals and 21 assists. The defender was voted the team's "Unsung Hero." He joins former Blast teammates Rusty Troy and Joe Koziol.

"I'm happy to be back in Baltimore," said Neely, a native of Garden Grove, Calif. "It was a tough couple of weeks for me while things got sorted out with the Spirit. As soon as everything was in place, I called and told them I wanted to come back. I really enjoyed my first year in Baltimore."

Last season was his fifth in the Major Soccer League, which no longer is in business. He also had stints with MSL teams in Los Angeles and Kansas City.

The Spirit, which has six players under contract, will begin its home schedule Nov. 7.
