September 02, 1992|By Alan Goldstein

Point guard Rudy Archer, who was an All-Metro choice at Southwestern High and led Maryland to the second round of the 1988 NCAA basketball tournament, will be one of the rookie/free-agent candidates invited to Washington Bullets training camp Oct. 5 at Shepherd College.

Archer, who dropped out of Maryland his senior year because of scholastic difficulties, later transferred to St. Mary's University in San Antonio.

The Bullets have also invited forward Mike Smith of Brigham Young, a 1989 first-round draft choice of the Boston Celtics; forward Rick Calloway of Kansas, who played briefly for the Sacramento Kings in 1990-91; and rookie free agents Craig Upchurch of Kansas and Rod Sellers of Connecticut. All participated in Wes Unseld's mini-camp at Bowie State in July.

Bullets veterans report Oct. 8.
