SYKESVILLE -- Police are investigating the death of a patient at Springfield Hospital Center who died unexpectedly Sunday.

Wendell Dezurn, 29, who had been a resident at the hospital for seven years, was found unconscious in his bed around 8 a.m. and could not be revived by ward personnel, Maryland State Police from the Westminster barracks said in a statement.

Mr. Dezurn was pronounced dead 15 minutes later by a staff physician.

Police, who are investigating the incident as a "suspicious death," have ruled out suicide because circumstances at the scene did not suggest it, said 1st Sgt. Steve Reynolds, a spokesman.

"We are investigating this as a suspicious death, and we are not ruling out homicide as a possibility," Sergeant Reynolds said.

Dr. Bruce Hershfield, the hospital's superintendent, could not be reached for comment.

A spokeswoman from the State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said Dr. Hershfield was not releasing any information about the incident.

Mr. Dezurn's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office in Baltimore for autopsy.
