The Emmys

August 31, 1992

Candice Bergen, a.k.a. Murphy Brown, the forty-something character who opted to bear a child out of wedlock and thereby drew the censure of Vice President Dan Quayle, was named Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series last night at the 44th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

Craig T. Nelson, who plays "Coach" in the ABC television comedy of the same name, won for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The awards for the best actress and actor in a drama series went respectively to Dana Delany, one of the stars of the canceled ABC series "China Beach," and to Christopher Lloyd, one of two actors to be nominated for a non-network show in the category.

"Northern Exposure" was named Outstanding Drama Series, and Murphy Brown" won in the comedy category.

The Emmy awards program itself, says Sun Television Critic

David Zurawik, isn't likely to win any prizes.
