Atholton Raiders 1992 Howard County footaball at a glance

August 30, 1992

Coach: Don Van Deusen, 19th year

1991 record: 6-4

Returnees: Seniors Richard Blankenship (G), Kevin Nickey (C/LB), Jason Walker (G/LB), Greg Russo (CB/S), Matt Rushing (WR); Juniors Carlando Love (RB/LB), Shane Beaver (T/DE).

Newcomers to watch: Seniors Ryan McQueeny (QB), Josh Harold (T/DT), Charles Fuller (WR/DB); Juniors Danny Garrison (LB/RB), Tony Stewart (WR/DB), Jason Albert (QB), Tony Lawson (CB), Tony Boswell (T/DE), Matt Treese (WR); Adam Martiny (T/DT).

Coach's outlook: "We've got some good kids coming back in the lines, but we've graduated almost all of our skill people. I don't see us throwing as much as last year. We're strong defensively at linebacker. We got some breaks last year, and we'll need more this year. We've got quite a challenge in front of us."

Howard County Sun outlook: The Raiders graduated most of the players responsible for last year's successful experiment with the run-and-shoot offense, but Van Deusen is committed to the offense. Look for Love to shoulder much of the load in what could be a breakthrough season for him. Still, a quarterback must emerge to keep defenses honest. The Raiders lack size and speed, yet Van Deusen has been winning with teams like that for years.
