John Carroll Patriots 1992 High school football preview

August 30, 1992

Head coach: Jerry Gray (15th season).

Assistant coaches: John Welsh, Ray Fino, Mike Daly, George Drummey, Terry Brant.

1991 record: 5-5.

Returnees: Seniors David Booth (C); Scott Bocek (OT); Brian Currey (WR); Myron Cole (RB); David Ishmael (QB). Juniors Ron Mincy (LB); Tom Slovick (MG); Tim Mostouf (FB-TE-LB); Obie Sims (FB-DE).

Newcomers: Seniors David Davis (OE-DE), Matt Hopkins (OE-DB); Seth Rigler (OT-LB). Juniors Jason Binert (OG-LB); Rice McElroy (OG-DE); Nick Jenkins (OE-DE); Mike Boyle (RB-DB); David Westervelt (QB-DB). Sophomores Greg Stotler (OT-DT); Chris Kufera (OT-DT); Shane Gray (RB-DB).

Coach's outlook: "We'll have quality rather than quantity. Our expectations are for an offense that is two-thirds run, one-third pass."

Harford County Sun outlook: The play of Stotler (6-1, 200), a two-way tackle up from the JV, has enabled Gray -- who likes his strongest player in the middle -- to move Booth (6-3, 270) to center. They -- with Bocek (6-3, 245) -- should provide running room for the backs, including Cole (5.2-yard average, 8 TD), and protection for Ishmael (53 percent, 1150 yards, 10 TD). Five starters return on offense. Of the two on defense, Mincy (second in tackles) is solid, but Slovick is injured. The Patriots will likely be around .500 again.
