Joppatowne Mariners 1992 High school football preview

August 30, 1992

Head coach: Karlis Larson (fifth season).

Assistant coaches: Greg Komondor, Ray Gerald, Jerry Lee, Mary Ann Smith, Bill Waibel, Tom Nelson.

1991 record: 8-4.

Returnees: Seniors Mike Harris (OG-LB); Chris Carr (OT-DT); Chris Weber (TE-LB); Jason Boswell (OG-DT); Cornelius Barmer (C-DT). Juniors Chad Gary (RB-CB); Rodney Briscoe (RB-LB); Cable Miller (OG-LB); Chuck Hunter (QB-DB); Vernon Wingfield (RB-DB).

Newcomers: Juniors Darnell Everett (QB-DB); Chris Shape (WR-DB). Sophomores Lewis McKissett (RB-LB); Avion Epps (RB-NG); Andre Turner (RB-DB); Alonzo McDowell (RB-DB).

Coach's outlook: "Because of graduation and a lack of depth [25 candidates], we will not be as strong as last year, at least at the start. We do, however, have the potential to be better."

Harford County Sun outlook: The Mariners have gone to the State Class 1-A playoffs the last three years. The offense will stay on the ground, with a large group of running backs going behind key linemen Harris (235) and Carr (210). Gary (5-9, 165) is considered a premier two-way player; Carr is the top defensive lineman, and Harris and Weber are the leading linebackers. A record over .500 is likely, and a return to the playoffs is an achievable goal.
