Peoples outlasts Mid-Amateur field

ROCKVILLE -- Buddy Peoples of Crofton Country Club said: "It played as hard as any course I've ever played," and he was the winner. Others chasing the sixth annual Maryland State Golf Association Mid-Amateur championship were less charitable in their assessment of the way the North Course at Woodmont CC was set up for the final round.

Peoples, whose opening 1-over-par 73 Monday had produced a one-shot lead, came back yesterday with 38-34--72, and a tournament-record 11-shot victory. Joel Kaye of Woodholme CC was one of four at 156, and he earned second place on a match of cards. Defending champion Jerry Iorizzo had two 78s.

The greens were fast and true, and the course was in superb condition, but stretched beyond its listed 7,049 yards, and most players said it seemed more like 7,200. Most of the cups on the greens were only a few paces from the fringes. One player six-putted a green.

All of which made Peoples' round a memorable one. He had a birdie and three bogeys on the front nine, then ran in an eight-foot putt at No. 10, and holed a 20-foot bunker shot at the 16th for back-nine birdies. "I struggled on the front -- there were some impossible putts -- but I struck it well on the back, keeping the ball below the hole. You had to be patient."
