Reversal of fortunes lifts Owings Mills MACCABI GAMES

August 26, 1992|By Tara Finnegan | Tara Finnegan,Staff Writer

For a team that never had a full-scale practice or scrimmage before this week's 1992 Jewish Community Centers' North American Maccabi Youth Games, the Owings Mills soccer team played like veterans to combine for a 4-0 shutout against Syracuse (N.Y.) yesterday at UMBC.

"The team was put together in May, and after the tryouts, I realized lots of kids wouldn't be around to get together," Owings Mills coach Michel Snitzer said. "Six or seven people would be a big turnout for a practice."

The team lost, 4-0, to San Francisco in Monday's first-round game.

The loss to San Francisco was the on-the-job training Snitzer said the team needed to pull off a win against Syracuse. "I knew what these kids were capable of doing," Snitzer said. "We were aggressive, we looked for the open man and used our heads."

"We made more passes and talked more with each other," said Dmitry Gorelik, comparing yesterday's win with Monday's loss.

They also used the speed of right forward Gorelik, who scored two goals for the team. Joey Uddeme and Yani Rosenberg also scored for Owings Mills.

"I haven't seen many people as fast as him [Gorelik]," Snitzer said of the 16-year-old sophomore at Beth Tfiloh School.

Owings Mills will play Pittsburgh today at 12:30 p.m. at Catonsville High School. A win would give the team a good shot at making the playoffs, which begin tomorrow.
