Well, it's over. Not the season, not The Streak and, not yet, The Slump. But, at least, the Orioles' signing of Cal Ripken Jr. to the biggest salary package in baseball (until the next one) removes one cause of tension from Camden Yards.
There are others, not the least of which is the question of whether the contract negotiations (or lack of them) had distracted Cal Ripken at the plate. He is having a mediocre season by anyone's standards, a dreadful one by his own.
Mr. Ripken is too much the gentleman to go conspicuously laughing to the bank. But we would like to see him grinning at his father as he rounds third trotting home again.
