What do 100,000 pairs of shoes, 18,000 butlered hors d'oeuvres, 11 bars, two fashion shows and three bands have in common? They are just a few of the highlights at the Nordstrom opening at Towson Town Center Sept. 9, which will benefit the Junior League of Baltimore's community projects.
Kathy Valentine, sales promotion director of Nordstrom, is handling the arrangements for the gala and led a group of people on a tour of the store Monday. In addition to yours truly, Junior League President Deb Kennedy; gala chair Pam Malester; gala assistant chair Dina Klicos, who's just agreed to become public relations director for the League; Nancy Gall Aronson, gala public relations; and caterer Charles Levine got a look at where the music, food, bars, etc., would be located.

Members of the Nordstrom family will be among the more than 2,000 guests at the opening. But don't let that number stop you from attending. The store is so big, it could handle twice that number.

I heard about package deals for golfers and exciting Labor Day weekend power boat races while on a two-hour ride around Baltimore harbor aboard the beautiful yacht Mary Lynn, which belongs to the Maryland Port Authority.
Ocean City Mayor Fish Powell brought a contingent of distinguished citizens from Maryland's most popular resort city to town Monday for Ocean City Night at Oriole Park. The host was Hal Donofrio, president and CEO of Richardson, Meyers & Donofrio, which recently landed a contract to handle a splashy Ocean City advertising campaign.
On board to exchange ideas were Jim Fox, general manager of Variety 104.3 FM radio; John Dillon, C&P's director of communications; Wayne Chappell, Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association; and Chris Hartman, vice president of Richardson, Myers & Donofrio.
Ocean City's business community was represented by Buddy Jenkins, owner of the Jolly Roger, the Pier and Thrashers; Dennis Dare, O.C. manager; Brice Phillips, Phillips Crab House; Hale Harrison, Quality Inn and Harrison's, and John Fager, owner of Fager's Island.
Traveling with them were members of the Ocean City Council: Rick Meehan, council president who sells real estate and owns a clothing store; Sally Hacking, who sells real estate and teaches aerobics; Buck Mann, condo management; Hank Westfall,
retired government worker; Jim Hall, miniature golf and amusements; and Jim Mathias, real estate, T-shirt shop and amusements.

MIX-106.5 FM radio is working on a present for NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. MIX hopes to collect 106,000 signatures on two 600-square-foot "Give Baltimore the Ball" billboards.

Welcome Dale and Laura Garvin to Baltimore on Friday. He's the new general manager of the Hyatt Regency Inner Harbor and comes to us from the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan and the Hyatt Regency in Lexington, Ky. Richard Morgan left the Baltimore Hyatt for the Lake Tahoe Hyatt, which sounds like a good trade to me.
I'm told that Baltimore commercial director Brian Keller is having a great year. Seems he's flying all over the country to direct commercials that feature the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Milton Berle, Ted Danson, Mary Lou Retton and Baltimore's multimillion-dollar baby, Cal Ripken Jr.
Keller's also working a project with Len Elmore, former UM/professional basketball star and ESPN talent.
