California Angels -- Placed P Steve Frey (4-2, 1 save, 3.99 ERA in 41 games) on the 15-day DL with a strained left rib cage. Called up P Scott Lewis from Triple-A Edmonton, where he was 10-6 in 22 starts.

New York Mets -- Announced the signing of Florida State P Chris Roberts, the 18th pick on the first round and a member of the U.S. Olympic team.

Oakland Athletics -- Placed OF Willie Wilson (.272, 34 RBI, 23 steals in 106 games) on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Aug. 17, with a strained right hamstring. Recalled IF Scott Brosius from Triple-A Tacoma, where he was batting .237.

Dallas Mavericks -- Signed F Dexter Cambridge (21.7 ppg, 8.7 rpg for Texas) to a one-year contract with an option for a second year.

Mid-Michigan Great Lakers (GBA) -- Named Jeff Walker coach.

Football

Cleveland Browns -- Acquired LB Frank Stams from the Los Angeles Rams and G Ron Milstead from the Dallas Cowboys for undisclosed draft choices. Stams, of Notre Dame, was the Rams' second-round pick in 1989. He was a starter in 1990 but missed much of last season because of a preseason injury to his left leg. Milstead, from Delaware State, was picked by the Cowboys in the fifth round this year.

Dallas Cowboys -- Waived LB Bernard Clark, DT Anthony Butts, TE Patt Evans, WR Anthony Green, S Chris Hall, FB Jay Hillman and G John Terry.

Detroit Lions -- Waived T Bubba Paris (who played on three Super Bowl champions in San Francisco), DB Rodney Rice, DB Tony Crutchfield, DB Darryl Milburn, LB Spencer Hammond, NT Dan Sileo, OL Ben Mitchell, OL Darryl Brooks, OL Mark White, PK Mike Riley, PK Wilson Hoyle, QB Greg Jones, RB Byron Sanders, RB Darrell Wallace, TE David Little, TE Eugene Riley, WR Darrin Eaton, WR Eddie Thomas, WR Ken Ealy and WR Yale Van Dyne.

Kansas City Chiefs -- Signed RB Christian Okoye, the 1989 NFL rushing champion, to a series of three one-year contracts. Okoye rushed for 1,480 yards in 1989, 805 in 1990 and 1,031 last year.

Los Angeles Raiders -- Waived RB Terrence Flagler, RB Vance Mueller, LB Niko Noga, LB Matt Gee, OL Tom Roth, DB John Diggs, DB Leon McGlockton and QB Scott Woods.

Miami Dolphins -- Signed FB Tony Paige to a multiyear contract.

New York Giants -- Waived DL Clint James, who spent two years with the team and never played in an NFL regular-season game, was among 13 players waived. Also released LB Kevin Carroll, LB Mike Peloskey, LB Scott Van Bellinger, PK David Cool, DL Dave Davis, DL Lubo Zizakovic (Maryland), OL Bob Dressel, OL Chris Dyko, OL Mike Kiselak, RB Torrey Wright, WR Greg Taylor and WR Nate Singleton. All the players released were free agents except Singleton, who was an 11th-round draft choice. Placed Plan B WR Millard Hamilton (arthroscopic surgery on right knee) and free-agent RB Charles Young (pinched nerve in neck) on injured reserve, meaning they cannot play this season.

New York Jets -- Cut 10 players, including LB Joe Mott, a starter in 1990 who missed last season with a knee injury. Other veterans released were OL Bruce Collie, a starter on the Super Bowl champion 49ers in 1988 and 1989; QB Mike Norseth; and DT Roy Hart. Also released CB Wayne Williams, RB Kelvin Fisher, WR Patrick Nelson, DE Matt Willig, G Claude Jones and WR Thomas Woods. Placed WR Eric Boles (knee injury) on IR.

New York Islanders -- Traded the rights to 21-year-old Swedish C Markus Thuresson to the San Jose Sharks for RW Brian Mullen (46 points in 72 games). Announced that D Tom Kurvers (9 goals, 47 assists), D Jeff Norton (1, 18) and RW Tom Fitzgerald (6, 11) agreed to salary arbitration.

New York Rangers -- Signed Michigan State G Mike Gilmore and Northeastern C Rob Kenny.
