Baltimore police are awaiting the results of an autopsy on the body of an 18-month-old girl found yesterday in a container on the front porch of her family's Reservoir Hill home.

Investigators continued to seek the toddler's father for questioning, although no charges had been filed against the man last night, said Agent Doug Price, police spokesman.

The girl's mother, Katrina Grimes, 18, reported her missing Sunday.

Ms. Grimes told police she realized Shelby Marie Smith was missing when she woke up at about 6 a.m., Agent Price said.

Ms. Grimes, her daughter and another child were sleeping in a third-floor bedroom of the family rowhouse in the 900 block of Brooks Lane.

She told police that she believed her ex-boyfriend, the girl's father, had taken the girl.

"We have not positively determined that is the case," Agent Price said.

Investigators searched the house and the neighborhood after Ms. Grimes called police but did not find the baby, Agent Price said.

A relative discovered the body about 8:20 a.m. yesterday, police said. The body was in what police would describe only as "a container," which bystanders said might have been a trash can or bag.

Ms. Grimes, crying hysterically, was driven away for medical treatment and further questioning.

As the wrapped body of the girl was carried to an ambulance, neighbors and friends standing on the sidewalk shook their heads.

"I'm in a state of shock," said Willie Mae Davis, a longtime friend.
