Orioles -- Sent P Richie Lewis to Triple-A Rochester. Called up P Anthony Telford.

New York Yankees -- Placed P Tim Burke (2-2, 3.38 in 22 games) on the 15-day DL with tendinitis in his right elbow. Called up P Jerry Nielsen and P Bob Wickman from Triple-A Columbus. Wickman was 12-5 with a 2.92 ERA in 23 starts.

Oakland Athletics -- Placed 1B Mark McGwire (.270, 38 HRs, 93 RBI) on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Saturday, with a strained right rib cage. Recalled P Todd Revenig from Double-A Huntsville, where he was 1-1 with a 1.75 ERA in 31 games.

College

Newberry -- Named Marvin McGhee defensive coordinator and linebackers coach; Brian Allison defensive line coach; Mike Banther offensive line coach and equipment coordinator; and Robin Bradley women's volleyball coach.

Football

Dallas Cowboys -- Signed DE Tony Tolbert to a three-year contract. The Dallas Morning News reported that the contract was worth about $1.8 million.

Los Angeles Rams -- Agreed to terms with CB Steve Israel, a second-round pick from Pittsburgh, on a four-year contract that is believed to be worth about $2.15 million, including a $525,000 signing bonus.

New Orleans Saints -- Cut following free agents: P Rusty Carlsen, S Efrum Thomas, LB Thomas Griffin, LB Maurice Oliver and G Brian Nielsen.
