Orioles -- Placed OF Joe Orsulak on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 16, with a sprained left thumb. Called up P Richie Lewis from Triple-A Rochester. Announced that they will send Lewis to Rochester today and call up P Anthony Telford.

California Angels -- Assigned P Dana Ridenour to Triple-A Edmonton.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Placed P Ron Robinson (1-4, 5.86 ERA in 8 games) on the 15-day DL. He has a fractured rib in his left side.

Montreal Expos -- Traded P Dana Ridenour to the Angels for future considerations.

New York Yankees -- Asked for irrevocable waivers on P Shawn Hillegas (1-8, 5.51 ERA) for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Recalled P Russ Springer from Triple-A Columbus. Assigned OF Sean Twitty to Single-A Fort Lauderdale.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Placed OF Wes Chamberlain on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Wednesday. Recalled OF Tom Marsh from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

San Diego Padres -- Activated P Greg Harris from the DL. Harris was scheduled to start tomorrow against the Chicago Cubs in San Diego. Optioned P Frank Seminara to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Seattle Mariners -- Acquired P Tim Leary and cash from the Yankees for OF Sean Twitty. Placed P Erik Hanson on the 15-day DL. Optioned former Orioles IF Shane Turner to Triple-A Calgary.

College

Louisiana State -- Gave a three-year contract with an average salary of $55,000 to Sue Gunter, the third-winningest active women's basketball coach in the nation. Her career mark is 474-175, including 208-88 at LSU.

Michigan Tech -- Announced that Newell Brown, head hockey coach, has resigned to accept the same position with AHL Adirondack.

Football

Miami Dolphins -- Signed TE Chris Dressel.

New Orleans Saints -- Signed FS Gene Atkins and SS Brett Maxie, who had held out for 32 days, to two-year deals with no options.

San Francisco 49ers -- Waived TE Scott Asman, WR Kevin Evans, P Dale Hatcher, S Darian Hagan, DB John Robert Holland and P-K Robbie Keen.

Hockey

St. Louis Blues -- Signed F Vitaly Prokhorov, 25, drafted in the third round from Spartak of the Soviet League.
