Suspect escapes outside courthouse

County police were still looking yesterday for the Baltimore man who escaped from two private security guards in front of District Court in Annapolis Wednesday morning.

Benny Darrell King, 25, slipped out of his handcuffs and ran int the woods behind the courthouse.

Mr. King was being brought from the county Detention Center to his hearing on armed robbery and theft charges. He was chained to two other prisoners and was being guarded by two armed employees of Wackenhut Security Services.

As the prisoners were being unloaded about 8:30 a.m., Mr. King broke free, investigators said.

Annapolis police dogs and county police officers searched the woods and the surrounding area yesterday, but could not find him.

Mr. King was last seen wearing a gray sweat shirt and blu jeans. Police are watching his Baltimore home as well as his girlfriend's home in Pasadena.

Police have obtained a warrant charging Mr. King with escape.

* Pasadena: First block of Magothy Bridge Road: Aug. 19Construction equipment taken. Total loss: $2,500.
