Orioles -- Activated C Chris Hoiles from the 15-day DL. Optioned C Mark Parent to Triple-A Rochester.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Agreed to a four-year working agreement with Double-A El Paso.

Minnesota Twins -- Placed P Paul Abbott on the 15-day DL. Recalled P Mike Trombley from Triple-A Portland.

Montreal Expos -- Optioned P Bill Sampen (1-4, 3.13) and IF Archi Cianfrocco (.241, 6 HRs, 30 RBI) to Triple-A Indianapolis. Recalled 1B Greg Colbrunn from an injury-rehabilitation assignment in Indianapolis. Recalled C Tim Laker from Double-A Harrisburg. Resolved a grievance with former OF Dave Martinez before it was to go to an arbitration hearing Friday.

San Francisco Giants -- Acquired IF Brett Jenkins from the Montreal Expos for P Gil Heredia. Heredia will report to Triple-A Indianapolis. Jenkins will go to Single-A San Jose.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Placed P Pat Hentgen on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Thursday. Recalled P Bob MacDonald from Triple-A Syracuse.

Basketball

Boston Celtics -- Announced the retirement of F Larry Bird and named him special assistant to the executive VP.

Philadelphia 76ers -- Signed fifth-year F Armon Gilliam (16.9 ppg, 8.1 rpg last season) to a contract extension.

Phoenix Suns -- Signed C Tim Kempton, who played the last two years for Glaxo Verona in Italy, to a guaranteed two-year contract.

Portland Trail Blazers -- Signed restricted free-agent F Mark Bryant to a three-year contract.

Baloncesto (Spanish League) -- Signed F Chris King, the Seattle SuperSonics' second-round draft pick from Wake Forest, to a multiyear contract.

College

Big West Conference -- Announced it will move the postseason basketball tournament to the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas in 1994.

Florida State -- Announced baseball C John Cook has transferred to Mansfield.

Lamar -- Named Dave Miller and Tommy Tubbs men's assistant basketball coaches.

San Jose State -- Named Brad Winslow men's assistant basketball coach.

Football

Denver Broncos -- Waived QB Steve Pelluer, LB Mark Murray, WR Vernon Jones, DL Scotty Reagan and DB Paschall Davis. Pelluer, who signed as a Plan B free agent from the Kansas City Chiefs for $1.2 million, had been envisioned as the backup for John Elway. The cut leaves second-year player Shawn Moore and rookie Tommy Maddox as the only backups.

Green Bay Packers -- Agreed to terms with OT Ken Ruettgers on a one-year contract. Waived FB Walter Dean, NT Chris Williams, WR Linzy Collins and WR Pat Jackson. CB Jerry Holmes left training camp and is expected to retire.

Los Angeles Rams -- Released second-year PK Jerry Kauric.

New York Jets -- Waived TE Pat Kelly, QB Kerwin Bell, RB Blaise Bryant, LB Pepper Jenkins and P Scott McAlister.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Agreed to terms with RT Tunch Ilkin, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, on a one-year contract.

San Diego Chargers -- Released DE Greg Joelson.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Signed CB Ricky Reynolds, a starter since 1987 and fifth on the team's career interception list with 14, to a two-year contract.

Golf

PGA Grand Slam of Golf -- Announced that Grand Slam winners Nick Price, Fred Couples, Nick Faldo and Tom Kite will compete in the Lihue, Hawaii, tournament, a two-day, stroke-play event on Nov. 10-11.

Hockey

New York Islanders -- Re-signed RW Patrick Flatley to a multi-year contract.

New York Rangers -- Signed former Michigan State D Michael Stewart.

Philadelphia Flyers -- Named Mark Piazza public relations director.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Signed C Mark Green and LW Jeff Gardiner.

Washington Capitals -- Signed D Ken Klee.

San Diego Gulls (IHL) -- Signed F Robbie Nichols to a two-year contract extension.

USA Soccer Federation -- Named Ron Newman adviser to indoor coach John Kowlaski.
