Taneytown will host Dodgers Showdown tomorrow

SPORTS THIS WEEK -- County sports events through Tuesday

August 19, 1992|By Glenn P. Graham | Glenn P. Graham,Staff Writer

It was three years ago when the Taneytown Cardinals ended the Littlestown Dodgers' 12-year dynasty as "kings" of the South Penn League.

Since then, the Cardinals have ruled the roost in the SPL with two straight titles and, at 32-4 this season, seeming geared to a third one.

It only seems fitting that the last team in the Cardinals' way is Littlestown.

The Cardinals will host Littlestown at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the opening game of the best-of-five championship series.

Both teams are coming off impressive semifinal sweeps over the weekend. The Cardinals defeated Thurmont, 15-3, on Saturday. The Dodgers (24-12) ousted Cashtown, 11-1.

Shannon's Saloon (6-0) will square off against Greene Turtle (5-1).

The finals originally were slated for Aug. 2, but a miscommunication resulted in the Greene Turtles not showing for the game on time.

Shannon's was awarded the title by forfeit, but later agreed to reschedule the game.

In the regular season contest, Shannon's defeated Greene Turtle 14-10.

* The American Softball Association is having a 'C'/'D' Slow-Pitch Tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at the complex.

Eldersburg Inn, Modern Comfort, Harrell's, Lehigh and Maggie's -- all members of the Carroll County Men's League -- were among the 20 teams slated to participate in the tournament.

* The over-30 men's indoor soccer division finals at Four Seasons Sports Complex is set for 8 p.m. tomorrow.

North Carroll and the Hanover Silver Eagles entered post-season play as the favorites after finishing 1-2 in the regular season.

* The finals of the Carroll County Unlimited Baseball League are tentatively set for 6 p.m. tomorrow at Landon Burns Park in Westminster.

A.G. Carry-Out was scheduled to play the Westminster Storm Tuesday night [after press time] in a losers' bracket game.

The winner will have to defeat Carroll County Pools -- the regular season winners who have yet to lose in the double-elimination post-season tournament -- on Thursday and again Sunday afternoon at 2.

The Carroll County Men's Softball League will have its 'A' division post-season tournament this evening at the complex.

Elite 10 were the regular season champions with a 21-7 mark. Harrell's Agency (19-9), Vee's Tees (18-10) and Lehigh (16-12) were the other teams of the eight-team division with winning records.
