South River High drops field hockey

August 16, 1992

South River High has dropped its field hockey program because a qualified coach could not be found, said Athletic Director Jim Haluck.

Laura Garner, who led the Seahawks to the playoffs the past two seasons, accepted a commission with the Air Force, Haluck said.

"I have 60 girls who want to play, but I can't find anyone qualified to coach. And I'm not doing this with someone who doesn't know what they're doing. I'm left with no alternative," Haluck said.

Haluck was able to fill three assistant football coaching postions and head cross country and volleyball coaching positions this summer. But he didn't have the same luck with the golf program, which also was discontinued.
