Boston Red Sox -- Recalled P Michael Gardiner from Triple-A Pawtucket. Optioned P Daryl Irvine (2-2, 5.79 ERA) to Pawtucket.

Detroit Tigers -- Activated OF Rob Deer. Placed P Kevin Ritz on the 15-day DL.

Kansas City Royals -- Activated 2B Keith Miller, out since July 11, from the 15-day DL. Placed OF Jim Eisenreich (strained right side of his rib cage) on the 15-day DL retroactive to Wednesday.

New York Mets -- Signed P Barry Jones (5-6, 4.64 ERA in 44 games with the Philadelphia Phillies before being released last week). Purchased the contract of IF Steve Springer from Triple-A Tidewater, where he was hitting .291 with 15 HRs and 67 RBI. Moved IF Dave Magadan (broken wrist) from the 15-day to the 60-day DL. Optioned P Eric Hillman to Tidewater.

New York Yankees -- Activated OF Danny Tartabull. Optioned P Jerry Nielsen to Triple-A Columbus.

Seattle Mariners -- Activated P Mike Schooler from the 15-day DL. Optioned P Kerry Woodson (0-1, 3.29 ERA in 7 games) to Triple-A Calgary.

Basketball Atlanta Hawks -- Agreed to terms with F-G Paul Graham on a two-year contract. Announced that F Alexander Volkov has signed a contract with Reggio Calabria of the Italian League.

College Baylor -- Second-string Baylor RB David Loeb transferred to Stephen F. Austin. Sophomore OT Len Pawelek said he will sit out this season for non-academic reasons.

Florida State -- Announced that PK Gerry Thomas, DL Kelly Rush, DB Mack Knight and TE Matt Platto have left the football team. Thomas' 34-yard field goal attempt sailed inches to the right of the goal post in the final seconds of last November's 17-16 loss to Miami.

Hartwick -- Named Alvin Lollie defensive line coach and Fred Kobusvewski defensive end coach.

Illinois -- Basketball player Andy Kaufmann, who averaged 21.0 points two seasons ago, regained his eligibility.

Miami -- Dropped its men's golf program.

Yale -- Named Steve Pikiell men's assistant basketball coach.

Football Pittsburgh Steelers -- Signed former Michigan State FS Todd

Hockey Hartford Whalers -- Re-signed D Steve Konroyd (38 goals, 181 assists in 802 career games) to a multiyear contract.

New York Rangers -- Signed free-agent C Brian Sakic, a Washington Capitals draft choice three years ago who had been expected to play for the Skipjacks in 1992-93. Sakic, 20, is the younger brother of Quebec Nordiques All-Star Joe Sakic.

Pittsburgh Penguins -- Named Clark Osborn trainer.

Washington Capitals -- Agreed to terms with D Shawn Anderson. Traded G Steve Weeks to the Ottawa Senators for future considerations.

Soccer Buffalo Blizzard (NPSL) -- Named Trevor Dawkins coach.
