Atlanta Braves -- Named Bob Wolfe senior VP of administration.

California Angels -- Placed former Orioles IF Rene Gonzales (.277, 38 runs) on the 15-day DL with a broken left forearm. Purchased the contract of IF Damion Easley from Triple-A Edmonton. Announced that P Bryan Harvey (0-4, 13 saves), who hasn't pitched since June 30, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow tomorrow.

New York Mets -- Placed 2B Willie Randolph (.254, 2 HRs, 15 RBI) on the 15-day DL with a fractured left wrist suffered yesterday, when he was hit by a pitch from the Pirates' Bob Walk. Randolph is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Signed OF Chad McConnell, the 13th player taken in the June draft. McConnell hit .300 during the Olympics, tying Michael Tucker and Orioles signee Jeffrey Hammonds for the RBI lead with eight.

Basketball

Chicago Bulls -- Signed former Oklahoma State F Byron Houston, the 27th player selected in the first round of the draft, to a multiyear contract Wednesday.

Dallas Mavericks -- Signed former Arizona C Sean Rooks, a second-round draft pick, to a three-year contract.

Global Basketball Association -- Awarded Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a franchise to begin play in the 1992-93 season.

College

Carnegie Mellon -- Named Pete Antimarino wide receivers coach and Ron Smith defensive line coach.

Delaware -- Names Scott Ettough assistant athletic director for business affairs. Announced resignation of Benjamin Sherman, assistant athletic director.

Grambling -- Named Dennis "Dirt" Winston, who played 11 NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints, defensive coordinator.

Texas -- Suspended RB Butch Hadnot (501 yards last season) for seeking a transfer to rival Texas A&M. Hadnot is fighting for his academic eligibility.

Wagner -- Named George Martin women's assistant basketball coach.

Football

Green Bay Packers -- Signed DE Lester Archambeau.

Indianapolis Colts -- Signed CB Ashley Ambrose, the first pick on the second round, to a three-year contract. Cut free-agent RB Derrick Franklin from Indiana State.

Los Angeles Raiders -- RB Marcus Allen and DB Terry McDaniel ended salary holdouts and reported to training camp. Released free agent CB Tracy Sanders from Florida State and free-agent LB Greg Gilbert from Alabama.

New York Giants -- Signed former Duke QB Dave Brown, a supplemental draft pick, to a four-year contract. Sources close to the negotiations said Brown will receive $4.6 million, including a $1.6 million signing bonus.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Placed DB Ron Allen on waivers. Placed free-agent LB Jack Bradford from Maryland on injured reserve with a torn patella tendon in his left knee.

Seattle Seahawks -- Released free-agent DE Jason Wilborn.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Signed DB Chris Barber and DB Patrick Allen.

Golf

PGA -- Announced it has awarded the 1996 PGA Championship to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., returning to that city for the first time since 1952. Valhalla was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1986. It will be the third major championship in 14 years to be held at a course designed by Nicklaus.

Hockey

Detroit Red Wings -- Named Doug MacLean assistant GM.

Ottawa Senators -- Agreed to terms with draft selections LW Sylvain Turgeon, C Rob Murphy and RW Mark Lamb.
