Iredell earns place in U.S. Amateur

August 12, 1992|By From Staff Reports

SILVER SPRING -- Tom Iredell battled a rain delay to shoot a 5-under-par 65 for a 36-hole total of 138 over his home course, Indian Spring Country Club, to easily capture the medal in sectional qualifying for the U.S. Amateur championship yesterday.

"I felt a lot of pressure because everybody expected me to make it," the University of Virginia graduate said. "I have been playing well and just tried to blow off that other stuff."

A late-afternoon thunderstorm forced a 2-hour, 25-minute suspension of play. When it resumed, 44 of the starting field of 86 continued. When the round was called because of darkness, 11 players had not finished.

Defending champion Pam Soliman and Andrea Kraus carded 2-over-par 76s at Chestnut Ridge Country Club, and shared the first-round lead in the championship of the Women's Golf Association.
