Terps, Sooners set date at Arena for basketball

COLLEGE PARK -- The last time a University of Maryland basketball team played at the Baltimore Arena, the Terrapins went on to the NCAA Tournament.

The Terps are hoping the Arena will bring them similar luck this season. Maryland, which won the short-lived MCI Harbor Classic there in 1987, will play Oklahoma on Jan. 19 -- the first game between the schools.

"I think it's a good game for a lot of reasons," Maryland coach Gary Williams said yesterday. "You look at North Carolina, and they play in Greensboro and Charlotte. Obviously, we're well aware of the recruiting value of a game like this.

"We're the flagship school in the University of Maryland system, and it's good for the state and for our program to take a game to its largest city. We have a large number of alumni and fans that live in and around Baltimore, and this is a way of involving the entire state in our program. We're excited about playing in Baltimore."

Williams said the game against Oklahoma is the first in a two-game series with the Sooners, with the Terps returning to Tulsa or Oklahoma City for the 1993-94 season.

The Sooners will be one of 10 schools from last year's 64-team NCAA Tournament field to play Maryland during the 1992-93 season. Maryland opens its season Dec. 1 at home against UMBC. The Terps, eligible for postseason competition after a two-year ban by the NCAA, will play eight of their first 10 games at Cole Field House. Maryland will open its Atlantic Coast Conference season there Jan. 5 against Georgia Tech.

The inclusion of Oklahoma gives Maryland a fairly competitive non-conference schedule. The Terps also will play at West Virginia and La Salle, and will play host to Louisville.

At least 13 games will be televised. The Terps will appear on ESPN Feb. 17 at Wake Forest and Feb. 27 against Clemson. Maryland also will be on ESPN for the ACC Tournament, March 11-14 in Charlotte, N.C.

The Terps will play two exhibition games, against Bestmate-Haarlem from the Netherlands on Nov. 17, and Verich Reps, an Ohio-based team that beat Ohio State in a preseason game last year, on Nov. 24.
