Take a barbecue break

There's no need to cook this weekend, just jump in the car and go till you smell the aroma of food wafting through the air.

In South Carroll, head for Liberty Road, Eldersburg, where St. Joseph Church serves up its annual chicken barbecue from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday. In addition to home-grown corn and tomatoes with your meal, the Oriole Bird will make an appearance and entertainment will be provided.

For your shopping pleasure, visit the country store and buy a raffle ticket for a prize.

Dinner tickets are $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for seniors and $3.50 for children.

No need to wait till Sunday to eat out, however. The West Carroll Republican Club has its first annual Corn Roast, featuring

chicken and all the fixings, Saturday at 5 p.m. at the New Windsor Carnival Grounds.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $1 for children age 6 to 12 years.

If you have tickets, of course, your plans for Sunday include the Westminster Knights of Columbus' annual Crab Feast and Dance with hot steamed crabs, pit beef and music by Jack Edwards, WTTR radio disc jockey, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Westminster Riding Club, Colonial Avenue.

This week's feature is sculptures of old mills by Hugh and Charles Curtis, in addition to the fresh produce, baked goods, plants and handmade crafts.

For your musical listening pleasure, the 1992 Concerts in the Park series, sponsored by Carroll County Department of

Recreation and Parks and Arts Council, hosts the big band sounds of the Carl Hamilton Orchestra at 7 p.m. Sunday at Hashawha Environmental Appreciation Center, 300 John Owings Road, Westminster.

Admission is free but bring a chair; refreshments will be sold.

Don't wait for the weekend to begin before setting out for Carroll's last carnival of the summer in Hampstead.

Need just an hour to really relax? Try a pontoon ride on the lake Piney Run Park, 300 Martz Road, Eldersburg.

The whole family can enjoy the Full Moon Pontoon from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. tomorrow. Tickets are $1 for adults and 50 cents for children and seniors.

You also can go on a beaver search from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday. Tickets are $1 for adults and 50 cents for children and seniors.

Finally, have a pizza party on the lake from 6 to 7 p.m. tomorrow, so bring the kids or a friend. Tickets are $5.50 for adults and $4.50 for children.
