CANDID CLOSET

Gay Stewart is an office coordinator in the clinical lab of Good Samaritan Hospital. In her free time she exercises, walking 2 hours a day to maintain her weight. Ms. Stewart is also a licensed manicurist, and she finds doing the nails of her family and friends to be therapeutic.

How would you describe your taste in clothing?

For casual wear, I like a lot of funky clothes -- miniskirts and other silhouette-fitting things. I like clothes for going out dancing and TTC party-type outfits. At work, I'm fashionable, but it's conservative fashionable.

What's the newest thing in your closet?

The newest thing is a really hot dress that I got at Saks. It's a denim-look stretch dress that can only be worn for fun because it's very short.

What's the oldest thing in your closet?

I still have a suit my mother bought me to wear for interviews when I graduated from the University of Baltimore in 1984.

What's the most expensive thing in your closet?

A black leather swing coat that I purchased for $400 from Berman's leather store in Security Square Mall.

What's the least expensive thing in your closet?

The cheapest thing is the newest thing. My denim-look dress was $15 in Saks.

Do you have a true standby that you wear to feel good?

I have a black velvet catsuit that has gold studs and zips up the front that I like to wear when I go out. I always get compliments when I wear it.

What have you held onto for sentimental reasons?

I have a black leather skirt that's two sizes too big -- I've lost 20 or 25 pounds since I bought it. I just can't bear to get rid of it, even though I don't fit into it anymore.

What's your wardrobe weakness?

Color-wise, friends tell me I wear a lot of black and I guess I do lean to black, although I like strong colors, too. I guess my biggest weakness, though, is the Ellen Tracy department -- I love her stuff.

What are your favorite accessories?

I like costume jewelry and shoes. I have a pearl, gold and crystal filigree bracelet that I like to wear with an outfit that doesn't have a lot of accents. My favorite earrings are dangle earrings with white sequin balls on them. What's the wildest outfit you ever bought?

I bought a gold leather skirt that I haven't worn yet. I figure I'll wear it around the holidays to a nightclub, but I haven't found anything to go with it yet. I'll probably get a sheer blouse with a bustier.

Do you have any shopping tips to share?

I try not to buy things in hopes that I can build an outfit around it. It just ends up sitting in the closet like my gold skirt.
